Soccer365- Hamburg winger extraordinaire Mehdi Mahdavikia has conceded that he may opt not to renew his expiring contract if the club fail to achieve European football for next season.

The newly crowned Asian Player of the Year may draw overtures from AS Roma and Bayer Leverkusen if he is ready to leave HSV.

"Money is not the deciding factor,” Mahdivikia pointed out to Bild. “What counts is that I want to have the chance to play Champions’ League or Uefa Cup football on a regular basis."

Hamburg got off to an awful Bundesliga start, but have rallied under new boss Klaus Toppmöller and find themselves back in the race for a Uefa Cup place.

Roma linked with Iranian ace

PlanetFootball - Serie A leaders Roma have been linked with a move for Hamburg's Iranian midfielder Mehdi Mahdavikia.
Sources in Germany believe the 26-year-old, who recently landed the Asian Player of the Year award, is stalling over inking a new deal and is assessing his options.

Mahdavikia is out of contract at the end of the season and has already been linked with a number of Bundesliga sides, including big-spending Schalke and Bayer Leverkusen.

"Money is not the deciding factor. What counts is that I want to have the chance to play Champions League or Uefa Cup football on a regular basis," the fleet-footed winger told Bild.

Hamburg suffered a poor start to the season, but inspired by new coach Klaus Toppmoller the side have turned things around and are just three points short of a top-five finish.

Toppmoller has already stressed that keeping Mahdavikia is a top priority, but it remains to be seen if the Iranian ace can withstand the prospect of joining the Italian giants.
