IRNA - German football icon Franz Beckenbauer here Friday said Iran had a good chance of winning its friendly match against triple World Cup winners Germany.
"I think it will be a very exciting game and why should not be Iran able to win its match against Germany?," Beckenbauer told IRNA when asked about Iran's winning chances.
"It will be a different game for Germany compared to its game with Brazil. The circumstances and atmosphere will be different. The stadium will be sold out," the former German national team head coach added.
Pointing to the "football excitement" of Iranians, Beckenbauer stressed the fact that Iran has always played a "good role" in Asian football.
The vice-president of the German Football Federation (DFB) and head of the 2006 World Cup Organizing Committee said he thought that Germany would take the Iran friendly serious.
"I don't think the German team will underestimate Iran. I think every German player wants to prove to the team chief (Juergen Klinsmann) that he is the right player for the 2006 World Cup. So I don't think they will underestimate Iran," said Beckenbauer.
Referring to the first Germany-Iran football encounter during the 1998 World Cup in France, Beckenbauer said Germany had also difficulties beating Iran at that time.
Asked about his feelings hours before his departure to Iran, the former world football star responded, "I was with Bayern Munich in Iran 32 years ago. I think I will see a different Tehran than the one I saw in 1972. I am looking forward to visit Iran again after 32 years."
A football analyst for the German public television network ZDF, Beckenbauer will cover the Iran-German friendly match live from Tehran's Azadi Stadium.
